Hazel Henderson, born in 1933, is an English economist. She is particularly well known for research into areas of economics that are unexplored or the ‘blind spots’ of conventional economics. Most of her work relates to the creation of an interdisciplinary economic and political theory, which focuses on environmental and social concerns. For example some of her work has involved researching the value of unquantifiables, such as clean air and water, that are necessary for humans and other organisms to survive. She has founded the Calvert-Henderson Quality-of-Life Indicators, an alternative indictor to the Gross National Product, which examines many aspects of people’s lives including: education, employment, energy, environment, health, human rights and income.
She has written a number of important and influential articles and books, she is author of the award winning book Ethical Markets: Growing the Green Economy (2006). Her publications have been printed in a number of journals including: Harvard Business Review, New York Times, Le Monde Diplomatique and Australian Financial Review.
In 2005, Henderson started Ethical Markets Media, LLC, to disseminate information on green investing, socially responsible investing, green business, green energy, business ethics news, environmentally friendly technology, good corporate citizenship and sustainable development by making available reports, articles, newsletters and video gathered from around the world. She recently produced a television program, entitled Ethical Markets, which showcases socially responsible organisations and people around the world.
