Mr. Moremi Marwa
Chief Executive Officer, Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange, Tanzania
Moremi Marwa is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange PLC (DSE). He has fifteen years of broad experience in financial markets and senior management in multiple institutions – including Barclays, Deloitte and Ernst & Young. Moremi serves as a board member in various board of directors and board of trustees. These include: the Tanzania Revenue Authority, Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange PLC, Bank of Africa, University of Dodoma Endowment Fund, Strategis Insurance and Victoria Microfinance PLC. He also chairs the Sub-Committee responsible for markets integration and development for the Committee of SADC Stock Exchanges. Moremi is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), he holds MBA in Finance and B.Com in Accounting both from the University of Dar es Salaam.
Moremi is credited for his leadership in the transformation of the Dar es salaam Stock Exchange from a loss making mutual entity four years ago into a commercially run profit making public limited company which is self-listed in the Stock Exchange. This transformation includes new innovations, strategic positioning (within the enlarged framework of financing economic empowerment and financial inclusion), and efficiency in the electronic infrastructure deployment. Because of these initiatives there has been significant increase in the DSE market capitalisation, its liquidity, the pace of new listings and number of investors. Ultimately this has changed the DSE into a profitable entity, demutualised, run a successful IPO and self-listed – being the third Exchange in Africa to achieve this status out of 26 stock exchanges.
Prior to joining the DSE in 2013 Moremi was the Chief Executive Officer for Tanzania Securities Ltd (TSL), a securities brokerage, investment management and advisory firm. Before he joined TSL in 2010, Moremi was a Senior Manager in Ernst & Young’s Transaction Advisory Services and prior to that at Deloitte in Corporate Finance Services. During his tenure at Ernst & Young and Deloitte & Touché Moremi managed and led a variety of assignments that have included strategy developments, corporate finance structuring, capital raising, transactions support, syndicated loans structuring and reviews, valuations and financial modelling, investment advisory, feasibility studies and business plans. Moremi also worked in the banking sector with Barclays Bank Tanzania as well as Bank of Africa Tanzania.
For three consecutive years (2014 - 2016), The Institute Choiseul of France chose Moremi as one of the Top 100 Young Economic and Business Leaders for Africa and had been invited twice (in 205 and 2016) by the United States Government to participate in Africa Business Leaders Forum coordinated by the White House.
Moremi participate in various “thought-leadership” initiatives related to financial, economic and leadership issues via his weekly columns in the Citizen Newspaper and monthly thought leadership pieces in the Exchange Magazine. He has recently co-authored two books on Tanzania industrialisation strategy and its financing.
Apart from the academic certificates, Moremi also holds the ACI (Financial Markets Association) Treasury Operations Certificate, he is licenced by the Capital Markets & Securities Authority (CMSA) as Authorised Dealers Representative and Authorised Investment Adviser, he is also a Licensed as a DSE Floor Trader.
