Political Parties and the German-Turkish Community in Election Year 2009

German-Turkish Week 2009 is an event series taking place at the Amerika Haus Berlin that aims to raise awareness amongst the public of the history of the German-Turkish Community and its contributions to German society, while celebrating the richness of German-Turkish culture. All events will take place in German and are free for the general public to attend. No registration is required.
“Tipping the Scales? Political parties and the German Turkish Community in Election Year 2009” will look at the positions of Germany’s major political parties on issues affecting the German-Turkish Community, such as citizenship and education policy, as well as the challenges caused by the economic crisis. Party representatives and representatives from the public sector and civil society will debate the merits of their agendas, and the audience will have the opportunity to raise important issues. The program will include a panel discussion followed by a musical reception, and traditional Turkish cuisine will be available throughout the evening.

Music Program: Okan Frei UnpluggedTalented singer-songwriter Okan Frei will perform a live set of R n’ B, soul, and hip-hop for the German-Turkish Week audience. A Berlin artist of Turkish heritage, Okan Frei has been described as a “ein Fotograf seiner Umwelt” (a photographer of his environment) and draws the inspiration for his songs from his everyday experiences on the streets of Berlin. |
