Two Different Europes:

British and German Approaches to the EU

Tuesday, 24th March (10:00) Amerika Haus Berlin

As two of the most powerful members of the European Union, Germany and the UK have seemingly divergent attitudes towards the development of the organisation internally and as an actor on the international scene. Event Review

The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy was delighted to welcome Jan Techau at the Amerika Haus Berlin on Tuesday, March 24th, for a seminar on German and British approaches to the European Union. Mr Techau, an expert in European foreign and security policy and political communication, spoke at length about the development of German and British attitudes towards the EU, the current state of affairs, and the historical and cultural reasons for these differences. Having worked for the German Ministry of Defence, Mr Techau’s points combined practical experience with theory and offered fresh perspectives on contemporary issues. He highlighted, for example, that Germany may actually benefit from adopting a more pragmatic approach to European issues as illustrated by the UK.

Following a thorough and thought-provoking presentation Mr Techau fielded a number of questions that were raised by the audience, including the likelihood of Turkish accession to the EU and how the EU should proceed in its relations with Russia.
