Luís Almeida Sampaio

Ambassador of Portugal to Germany

Luís Almeida Sampaio studied historical sciences and law at university before embarking on his career in the diplomatic service in 1983. In 1987 Sampaio became a member of the Delegation of Portugal to NATO in Brussels and in 1990 was appointed the assistant to the Deputy Director of the Office of the Secretary General of NATO; between 1995 and 1997 Sampaio served as the diplomatic advisor the Portuguese European Commissioner. Following the breakup of Yugoslavia. Sampaio worked as Political Advisor for the NATO-led Stabilization Force (SFOR) in Bosnia and Herzegovina until 1999 and then as ambassador in Luanda, Angola until 2002. From 2003 to 2004 he was President of the Portuguese Institute for Development Cooperation and again served as ambassador from September 2004, this time in Algiers, Algeria. Sampaio was the MEPP (peace process in the Middle East) Coordinator for the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in 2007 and then ambassador in Belgrade from 2008. From the spring of 2012 Sampaio has served as the Ambassador of Portugal to Germany.
