Narratives of Power
Memory Politics in Europe and the Contemporary World
Overview
“Narratives of Power: Memory Politics” is a program established by Historians Without Borders to examine how collective memories are shaped, contested, and used by states, institutions, and social actors. The program explores the mechanisms through which historical events are framed in public discourse, how these narratives influence political decision-making, and the ways in which memory is mobilised in moments of conflict, transition, and societal change.
The program brings together historians, policymakers, and civil society representatives to analyse current developments in memory politics across Europe and the broader international environment. Through comparative case studies, expert discussions, and public engagement, it aims to clarify the role of history in contemporary power structures and to support approaches that foster transparency, accountability, and informed dialogue. The emphasis remains on understanding how historical narratives can contribute to cooperation, conflict mitigation, and responsible international relations.
