Governance, Memory and History

Historical Knowledge for Peacebuilding, Conflict Prevention and Resolution

(Potsdam; June 1-3rd, 2026)

Overview

“Narratives of Power: Memory Politics” is a programme developed in collaboration with Historians Without Borders, with which the ICD has already organised events in Potsdam (2025) and London (2026) on how collective memories are shaped, contested and used by states, institutions and social actors.

The programme examines the mechanisms through which historical events are framed in public discourse, how these narratives influence political decision-making and the ways in which memory is mobilised in moments of conflict, transition and societal change.

The programme brings together historians, policymakers and civil society representatives to analyse current developments in memory politics across Europe and the broader international environment. Through comparative case studies, expert discussions and public engagement, the programme aims to clarify the role of history in contemporary power structures and to support approaches that foster transparency, accountability and informed dialogue.
The programme will also include a presentation of HWB’s History in Exile project, which brings together Russian historians living in the diaspora in European countries to discuss and examine Russian history and memory politics. The emphasis remains on understanding how historical narratives can contribute to cooperation, conflict mitigation and responsible international relations.

The next event will take place in Potsdam from 1–3rd June 2026.
