Biography
Elmar Brok is Vice President of the Institute of European Policy, Senior Fellow of Aspen Germany and member of the presidium of the German Society of Foreign Policy.
He has been a Member of the European Parliament from 1980 to 2019, for 13 years Chairman of its Foreign Affairs Committee and represented the EP in all negotiations since the Maastricht Treaty until the Treaty of Lisbon.
He is Honorary President of the Transatlantic Policy Network, Vice-Chairman of the World Christian Democratic Alliance and a member of the EPP Executive Committee. For 16 years he was Co-Chairman of the EPP-Foreign Ministers.
Brok has been a member of the CDU’s Federal Executive Committee from 2004 until 2021 and Chairman of its Committee on Foreign, Security and European policy from 1989 until 2019.
Since 2012 Brok has been for six years Founding Chairman of the Board European Endowment for Democracy, which aims to promote civil society engagement with a democratic, humanitarian focus in neighboring EU countries. As Co-Chair of the Transatlantic Legislators’ Dialogue, he was also for nearly 20 years committed to promoting political discourse between European and American legislators. Brok is Honorary President of the European Union of Germany.
He studied law and political science partly at the Centre of European Governmental Studies at the University of Edinburgh. He completed a training as radio journalist and, in addition to his political career, worked for radio outlets and newspapers. From 1991 to 2011, he was appointed Senior Vice-President Media Development of Bertelsmann AG.
