The Angolan Civil War was a clash between the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). The Lusaka Protocol was signed on 31 October, 1994. Its purpose was to put an end to the civil war in Angola by reconciling the entire nation. An official ceasefire was signed on 20 November, 1994 as part of the Lusaka Protocol. In addition, the agreement looked to merge UNITA politically with MPLA, and have them disarmed. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and South African President Nelson Mandela attended the historic signing to help legitimise and promote the agreement.
