Two agreements were signed at the White House by Menachem Begin of Israel and Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt, with the guidance of US President Jimmy Carter. These agreements ended a 30-year long state of war between the two countries, by normalising relations and setting a framework for a wider peacebuilding effort in the region, including measures for Palestinian autonomy in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. However these agreements largely resulted in a stalemate until the Oslo Peace Accords of 1993, mainly due to different interpretations of the Palestinian clauses by the different parties.
