Prof. Dr. Barbara John

Barbara John is a teacher, political scientist, and a Prof. of Ethnology at Humboldt-University Berlin.

Since June 2003 Barbara John has been the Coordinator for Language Training for Migrants at the Berlin Ministry of Education. Barbara John was the Commissioner for Migration and Integration of the Berlin Senate from 1981-2003.

The main task of the Commissioner of Foreigners’ Affairs was to address primary questions concerning the Berlin Senate’s policy on foreigners and integration, to consult with all corresponding departments, and to coordinate their work. Ms. John holds degrees in Teaching, Political Science and Pedagogy, having studied in London, and Berlin. Her areas of expertise are political science, epistemology and the theory and economics of education. Before becoming Senate Commissioner she taught „German as a second language“ at the Free University Berlin. Ms. John has published extensively on pedagogy and on migration issues. She lectures on integration and migration topics at national and international conferences. Prof. John holds membership in relevant boards and commissions.
