MA in International Economics & Cultural Diplomacy

(Berlin; Program Start for Fall Semester: October 2nd, 2013)

About the Degree

The Degree is offered by Babes-Bolyai University in partnership with the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies.

The increasing influence of multinational corporations on state policymaking has influenced the situation of the Twenty-First Century to the point that private business, international economics and international relations have become inextricably linked. In addition, as the move towards more socially responsible business practices gains momentum, the ability to understand and embrace the different values and needs of diverse cultures and societies has become increasingly significant to the understanding and practice of international relations. Governments, corporations, and economic global governance institutions have recently become more aware of the differences between cultures in their strategic decision-making process, and have therefore begun to adopt Cultural Diplomacy models into their agenda through various means.

In the era of growing social awareness, players with culturally sensitive marketing plans and campaigns will enjoy a positive public opinion and good image, and thus financially perform better. Global players with a national focus face a related challenge in ensuring that they are aware of and sensitive to national cultural minorities, while corporations seeking to expand abroad will encounter problems unless they conduct research into, and act accordingly, to the cultural differences with the host country.

Harnessing the potential of Cultural Diplomacy as a sustainable, responsible business strategy, the program in International Economics and Cultural Diplomacy prepares students for prospective careers in international relations by providing them with comprehensive training in international relations, international business affairs while emphasizing a unique brand of diplomacy that furthers the social and cultural power of the private sector. This approach to international business and affairs ensures that the leaders of tomorrow are adequately prepared for the challenges of an ever-changing and increasingly interdependent world.

Operating under a joint partnership, Babes-Bolyai University and the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy are the first institutions to offer a Master of Arts degree program that will educate students from around the world in several academic disciplines related to International Economics, International Relations, and Cultural Diplomacy.

Therefore, during Semester Two of the program, together with the support of our Faculty advisors and Career Services department, we will create a strategy with the student of how to proceed immediately from the MA to the career of their choice, should that be the desire of the student.

“As the global financial crisis has demonstrated, the global economy influences all areas of our lives. It is intimately connected to issues such as global activity against climate change, extreme poverty, immigration and integration, healthcare, development, education, and culture & the arts. As such, discussion on the future of the global economy must incorporate perspectives from a diverse range of fields, including international politics, cultural diplomacy, civil society affairs, and multiple academic disciplines, such as sociology, philosophy and anthropology.”

Prof. Dr. Vasile Puscas, Director of Programs
